WorldCon 2013 Report: Day One — What Makes a Review Great?

reviewPanel: Alvaro Zinos-Amaro, Mari Kotani, D. Douglas Fratz, Moshe Feder, Liza Groen Trombi

This was a somewhat disappointing panel, chiefly because I expected more of a "here are the elements of a good book review" and it turned into more of a discussion of reviewing styles and how/why reviews are done.

Other Notes

  • Use reviewers to guide us to authors and new and interesting work
  • For new authors, or someone reviving their careers, it’s a way to see what’s going on
  • There’s too much out there
  • Reviewing is a service industry
  • Write a review enjoyable to read for its own sake
  • Reviewing can be an art form in itself
  • Something that makes me want to read something I otherwise wouldn’t have
  • Context in the field is important
  • Reviewers should have a point of view
  • No publicity is good publicity for some books
